Featured Project: New Boilers and Tanks Installed at DSNY Facility
LiRo recently provided design and construction management services for the replacement of boilers and tanks at the NYC Department of Sanitation's Central Repair Shop in Maspeth, Queens. The power and heat distribution center, located in a decommissioned incinerator building, services multiple DSNY and NYPD buildings that share the full city-block site. Since the buildings are in continuous operation, two temporary boilers maintained power production throughout construction. The boiler plant is located on the second floor. Openings were cut in an exterior wall, and the three existing boilers were dismantled and removed. Three new 750 HP dual fuel fire tube boilers were then hoisted up to the location and slid into place on temporary rails. The work included the installation of burners, economizers, associated piping, and controls. The $9.8 million project also entailed the installation of five 10,000-gallon above-ground oil storage tanks and their associated electronic controls.
This assignment is part of LiRo's ongoing on-call contracts with NYCDDC for construction management and design-build services for the removal, upgrade, and replacement of City-owned heating oil tanks at various sites throughout the five boroughs. NYCDDC manages a major program to remediate and monitor City-owned sites with petroleum contaminated soil and ground water, to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, as well as with all protocols required by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Sites include facilities operated by FDNY and NYPD; the Departments of Sanitation, Environmental Protection, Parks; and the Board of Education. Under five consecutive contracts over 10 years, LiRo has provided services at over 800 facilities throughout New York City.
