NEC Gateway Improvements Hudson Yard Tunnel and MOE Facility
In anticipation of extensive overbuild development at the Hudson Yards, this project will preserve an underground right-of-way for future passenger Amtrak rail service expansion from New York Pennsylvania Station, under the Hudson River, to Newark New Jersey. LiRo is acting as Owner's Representative for the installation of a storm resilient, 800 ft long by 50 ft wide by 35 ft tall concrete casing that will extend between 10th and 11th Avenues under the development area. The timing of the casing installation is crucial, since once the overbuild of the yards commences above, it will no longer be feasible to build the tunnel box and support structure. In addition, the Gateway Program will incorporate new resilient design standards to protect the passenger rail system against flooding from future storm events. The existing tunnels were severely impacted by water infiltration caused by Superstorm Sandy.
The casing is supported on secant piles and caissons, and extensive utility relocations of storm and sanitary sewers, water mains, and gas supply lines was required to permit construction. LIRR maintenance facility buildings were relocated, and extensive operations coordination with LIRR and Amtrak have been required throughout the project to minimize interruptions to train operations.
