Triborough Bridge Deck Replacement
The LiRo Group provided resident engineering services for the $272 million Triborough Bridge Deck Replacement, on the Ward's and Randalls Island Viaduct, which was the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority's (TBTA) largest bridge project to date. Some of the project elements included: bearing replacement on the Queens Approach and Bronx Truss; construction of new ramps; and access road construction on Randall's Island.
Due to our previous experience working on the first phase of this bridge improvement program, LiRo could provide numerous value-added services to this major infrastructure project. LiRo's Resident Engineering staff was very familiar with the multiple agencies that had jurisdiction adjacent to, above and below the project construction sites. Our firm's thorough understanding of this site's unique and challenging location translated to proactive management by our team. For instance, LiRo initiated biweekly meetings that involved all stakeholders, and users of both Ward's and Randalls Island.
Since both Wards and Randall's Island house several government facilities, a mental health facility, and a large outdoor sports stadium, all of which were impacted by construction, LiRo worked closely with the TBTA on the most effective ways to sequence work, and to define scopes for portions of the project, that would accommodate the sports and events schedules on Randall's Island. This close involvement ensured that the client played an active role in the planning of overall activities in the area, thus, minimizing impact to users on both Wards and Randall's Island.
