Winthrop-University Hospital Outpatient Cyberknife Installation
LiRo provided MEP engineering design and construction administration services for this groundbreaking facility constructed within the lower level of an existing Manhattan commercial building. As the equipment generates high levels of energy radiation, walls surrounding the treatment room were constructed with high density concrete blocks infused with lead to shield adjacent spaces from emissions. A heavily structurally reinforced floor pad was installed to accommodate the weight of the equipment. LiRo designed HVAC systems to maintain the continuous stringent temperature and humidity controls needed for proper equipment operation, as well as a new electrical service to support the high energy needs of the project. Substantial planning and design were necessary to allow for the installation of the Cyberknife and CT Simulator equipment in the lower level of the space. The building elevator shafts were not large enough to allow for the equipment to pass down, so LiRo coordinated an opening in the suite floor to rig the materials and equipment up into the space during construction.
