Brooklyn Center for Rehabilitation & Residential Healthcare

Rehabilitating for a Rehabilitation Facility

Location

Brooklyn, NY

Clients

Centers for Healthcare

Project Cost

$80 million

Overview

The abandoned seven-story St. Mary’s Hospital was converted into the Brooklyn Center for Rehabilitation & Residential Healthcare. LiRo-Hill provided full mechanical, electrical, and telecom engineering and energy services for the conversion into a future 281-bed nursing home.

About the Project

The MEP design consists of a complete overhaul of the MEP systems in the facility. The HVAC systems for the facility include three dedicated outside air units with dual enthalpy wheels, as well as a water source heat pump system with high efficiency condensing boilers and two variable speed cooling towers to provide heating and cooling for the entire building. The plumbing design included domestic water booster pumps to allow for sufficient operating pressure to feed the seven-story building. Gas-fired domestic water heaters and recirculation pumps provide domestic hot water for the facility. LiRo-Hill also performed medical gas design for the facility-piped oxygen, and vacuum medical gas systems were provided for vent bed locations.

Project Challenges & Solutions

LiRo-Hill investigated multiple design options to upgrade the neglected infrastructure and support the new architectural program, and advanced modeling techniques were utilized to analyze their relative cost benefits, resulting in the above project features.

Outcome

This state-of-the-art facility will better serve the surrounding community for years to come.
