The LiRo-Hill Materials Testing/Special Inspections group just recently finished a 24-day, 24/7 MBTA surge, supported by both the Middlesex Corporation and SPS, New England, which provided Quality Control oversite inspections and testing services. LiRo-Hill provided up to 16 inspectors per day to cover the two 12-hour shifts. The surge covered track from JFK/UMass Station to Braintree Station. During the surge, 70,000 feet of running rail, 17,500 ties, 5,000 third rail insulators, over 85,000 feet of track surfaced, lined and tamped, and 36 speed restrictions, were removed. An estimated 24 minutes of travel time was reduced from the round trip for the MBTA ridership. There were zero OSHA recordables during this time, while 600-plus people worked on and around the track for the 24 days. Also, during this time, LiRo-Hill supported multiple add on projects, including JFK/UMass Pedestrian Bridge deck replacement, Elm Street Bridge Deck Repairs, Furnace Brook Bridge Emergency Repairs, Sunderland Road Bridge Repairs, and Stonybrook Bridge infill. This was all accomplished while also servicing our long-term projects for Hobbs Brook (1165 Norwood – FM Global World Headquarters), Middlesex (Andover 6 Bridge replacement package), WSP (MBTA Cambridge Bus Facility), Milton Animal Hospital, and the Shattuck Hospital.
